About Subedar Major in the Indian Army
The Subedar Major is the highest JCO rank and the senior-most non-commissioned member of a battalion (600-900 soldiers). There is only one Subedar Major per battalion — they serve as the principal advisor to the Commanding Officer (Colonel) on all matters concerning JCOs and ORs. The Subedar Major is the custodian of unit traditions, maintains discipline standards, and represents the troops at ceremonial occasions.
